| Spoiled Dinner |
Thanksgiving Day is my favorite holiday. When I was a child I impatiently had waited for this holiday for the whole year. There was much good in the holiday: warm atmosphere, tasty table, full of delicious food, wonderful smell of turkey and a lot of guests. But one day my mother was about to spoil my favorite holiday. I clearly remember that day as if it was yesterday. I was sixteen and my elder brother Andrew invited me to celebrate the meeting of his future wife and her parents that we were introduce to. It supposed to be a very exciting moment. Usually my mother didn’t cook. Generally, she did nothing in the house. For such cases we had Caroline. She was our neighbor and she was a retiree. She cleaned our house several times a week and cooked celebratory dinner when we acted as hosts. But that day my mother let Caroline go home. She wanted to show and to proof that she was a good host. But we hadn’t time to mother’s experiment. We tried to do everything that not only admits her to cooking. My father set about cooking turkey, I began to peel batata and Andrew had to turn to cranberries. So, we didn’t leave any chance for mother to spoil dinner. But in spite of everything she could do it. When turkey was in oven, batata was on the range we left the kitchen and asked our mother to do only one thing – to follow us. And she decided to seize the moment. She secretly decided to make a pumpkin pie. And it was a fatal mistake. She was too busy with cooking the pie that forgot about our request. I remember when I entered the kitchen there was a smoke and we couldn’t save our celebratory turkey. And there left only one hope – batata. But to our disappointment it was spoiled too. I was very busy with keeping my mother away from food that I accidently salted it twice. So, we weren’t ready for it. And as for the pumpkin pie, it was first mother’s pie and I can’t speak about successful result. So, we had no food, smoke in the kitchen and guests in the living room. And there was only one chance to save the holiday – to order China food. It was the only Thanksgiving Day in my life without turkey, but after this case we had never left our mother in the kitchen alone. |
